Workshop Status

Quick update on the Semantic Web Workshop. I recently added some interesting web links over by the coffee bar. Just click on the picture and you’ll be prompted to go to the web page. I’ve also posted 3 videos of lectures given by Tim Berners-Lee. He’s the father of the World Wide Web and is probably the chief Semantic Web evangelist. More info in a bit.

Please contact me with any requests. I’ll be happy to put up any links and videos you think the group might enjoy.

Applications in Second Life

I’ve been searching around Second Life for activity related to the Semantic Web. I’ve found three items that may be of some interest.

semSL - Tagging and Data Linking for Second Life

semSL is a project in Second Life and provides two different facilities for tagging entities, a wearable HUD and a visible prim called a “Tagget”. Tag information is recording by writing tags into SL’s chat line. The semSL project appears to be on hold. From what I can tell, the project is sponsored by FZI. There is a project page in FZI’s Information Process Engineering area. There was a really nice web page for semSL but access is no longer allowed.

FZI has a building in Second Life.

sloog - Tagging the New World

Sloog is a bookmarking service for Second Life residents. From the surface, Sloog does not appear to use Semantic Web technologies but it does serve as an example at how powerful a system such as semSL could be.

NaturalOWL - Natural Language Presentation of OWL Ontologies

There is an Adaptive Museum Gallery within Second Life, which can automatically tailor itself to an individual visitor, responding to their abilities, interests, preferences or history of interaction. The system uses an OWL ontology that is translated into English and Greek using NaturalOWL, an open-source natural language generation engine written in Java. The source code is available at the NaturalOWL Source Forge Project. I posted a video of a demo in a previous post. I’ve looked at the source code and got the system running in Protégé.
